The Edible Pen: Finally!

If you look around in your classroom or office, you're sure to see a couple of people chewing on the tips of their pens. Actually, I am one of them! It's not so much an addiction as it is a habit, but still, it can have some nasty side effects. First of all there´s the dirty chewed up tip of the pen you leave behind, but most recognizable is the nice fat blue ink stain in the corner of your mouth. Well, for all you pen-chewers out there, the solution is here: The Edible Pen by our Dutch designer Dave Hakkens.

The idea for the edible pen came when Dave wanted to find something to enable him to chew on a pen without making it dirty. He realized that the only part of the pen you really use is the ink, the rest is just there for better grip. That’s when he came up with the best invention since the wheel.

The pen is made from those colorful candy necklaces you can see on the picture. One pen contains 22 pieces of candy and the whole thing is filled with edible ink. Therefore, you can eat the whole pen, except for the hard tip of the pen. The candy is molten and then poured into a mold to cool off. This leaves a single pen-shaped piece of candy with indents to chew off. Insert the ink and it’s ready for use!

The best part is that it doesn’t melt in your hands and the candy doesn’t get sticky. The first finished model was peppermint flavored but as you can see, more flavors soon followed.
We haven’t seen the pens in the stores yet, but we hope it won’t take much longer; Exams are coming!
