Edible Helium Balloon

In the the Lincoln Park of the ‘Windy City’ Chicago, Illinois, there’s a very unusual restaurant called Alinea. Known for their peculiar dishes, one of the latest inventions is the Green Apple Helium balloon.

The balloon as shown in the video below, is 100% edible – even the string it’s attached to is made from dehydrated apple. It’s made from sugar and green apple and then filled with helium. It’s then the customers’ choice is he wants to inhale the helium and have a serious conversation, or simply poke it and let the helium escape. We, of course, prefer option 1.

The Balloon is part of the restaurant’s 23-course ‘Tour menu’ and is listed under the dessert section. Should you choose to dine at Alinea, don’t forget to bring your wallet; the 23-course menu sets you back $225 per person. There´s also the 12-course ‘Tasting menu’ for around $150.
Alinea is not the sort of restaurant you just walk into for a quick snack. First of all, there’s a waiting list of about 3 months and second of all, the average sitting takes about four and a half hours. Having a meal here is an experience and lets the customer taste a variety of delightful surprises, the Balloon being one of them. This is what makes Alinea number 6 on the Restaurant Magazines World’s 50 Best Restaurants list – making it the very best restaurant of North America.
